The mass tourism has taken every corner of Venice, so when there is a small place, away from the crowds, the locals want to save it. The site is the small island of Poveglia, located between Guidecca and Lido. It does not offer museums, churches or attractions, but only peaceful green views and gardens. Yesterday, a Facebook page was officially opened called “Poveglia for all” (Poveglia per tutti) which aims to support the preservation of the Venetian Island for the local residents. The main goal is to keep the island away from buyers who will probably turn it into a tourist place. The island is going to be auctioned on May 7th this year.
So far, there has been an enormous interest and requests from people around the world to participate in the initiative of saving the island. The idea came from a group of residents of Giudecca, who probably did not even imagine that their dream would turn into reality. Next Wednesday the founders of the Association Poveglia will meet with the public to further discuss the details of their plan.
So far, there are four key elements that must be considered: the green part of the island will be kept as a public park with gardens. The profits generated from the island will be used for its maintenance, the island will be managed as a non-profit company, environmentally sustainable and lastly, “in case of winning the shareholders will be entitled to participate equally in decisions regarding the fate of Poveglia , but they will not gain any profit or any source of privilege.”
The initiative slogan is “99 Euros for 99 years”. The interested parties will have to first pay 19 Euros of registration to “Association Poveglia”, which will also cover the costs to participation in the auction. Then the minimum subscription fee of 80 euro will be required from the members which is the amount going towards the 20,000 Euros needed to participate in the auction. Anyone wishing to donate more than 80 Euros is welcome, but this will not give any privileges or influential decision in the management of the island. If the auction is lost by the association, everyone who has donated will receive the refund of 80 Euros.
